"Lawyers and the Changing Landscape of European Human Rights Litigation: Trajectories, Strategies, Networks"

4 5 septembre 2025
Salle Alex Weill - Faculté de droit

This workshop examines the evolving role of lawyers in European human rights adjudication. It focuses on legal professionals who represent applicants or contribute to the construction of cases before bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Broader perspectives on international mechanisms, including commissions and treaty bodies, are also included.

The event brings together interdisciplinary perspectives to explore the careers, networks, strategies, and influence of lawyers in this field. It responds to recent developments, such as increasing restrictions on access to courts and the growing professionalisation of human rights litigation. Key questions include who enters the field, how legal expertise is formed, and what kinds of power dynamics shape legal practice. Contributions combine empirical approaches with theoretical and historical insights to examine how lawyers help shape the evolving field of human rights law.
